About visa
If your study in our university is less than 6 months, you can go to the Chinese Embassy in your country to apply for F-Status Visa with your JW201 Form or JW202 Form and the Admission Notice. Please notice that the 6-month duration of your stay in China is counted from the day of your entry into China and it can be extended when it expires. If your study is more than 6 months, you should apply for X-Status Visa. Please notice those holding X visas should apply and obtain the Chinese Residence Permit for Foreigner within 30 days of their entry into the country. Otherwise, they will face penalty from China Public Security Bureau. But do not worry, because the staff of Office of Overseas Students will assist you in obtaining the above-mentioned permit.
About physical exam
When coming to Xiamen to register yourself with OEC, you should submit the original copy of Physical Exam Record for Foreigners issued by the Quarantine Department of China’s Ministry of Health, together with the original reports of chest X-ray exam, electrocardiogram and supersonic exam, and the original Blood Test Record which includes items of AIDS, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. These physical exam records and reports have to be verified by the health and quarantine authorities of the Xiamen municipality before you are able to obtain the Health Certificate with which you can apply for Foreigner’s Residence Permit. If you have not completed all the items required or have not had the exam at all, the make-up physical exam can be conducted in Xiamen by the relevant health and quarantine departments (all the expenses incurred are covered by yourself). Generally, OEC arranges all the freshmen students within one week after the registration to verify the records and reports or to have physical exam at Xiamen Exit & Entry Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. Under the regulations, we don’t accept anybody suffering from mental disorder, epilepsy, leprosy, AIDS, V.D., open TB and other infectious diseases. Once discovered, he or she will be required to withdraw and leave the country immediately.
About university campuses
Xiamen university includes three campuses, foreign students who come to the university to study Chinese, Chinese language & literature and who are MA or Ph.D. candidates will stay on the main campus in the city. OEC may organize students to visit the other two campuses located in Jimei and Zhangzhou respectively.
About test for tracking purpose
The purpose of the test held during the orientation week is for us to know how well overseas students’ Chinese is, so that we track students accordingly. Please don’t worry even if you have not learned Chinese at all; we have classes for beginners. Our experience tells us that beginners are always fast learners.
About Residence Permit
If a foreign student holding the Chinese Residence Permit wishes to study Chinese at OEC, he/she may come directly to the college for registration.
About scholarships
Xiamen University accepts foreign students with scholarships awarded by the Chinese government and welcomes students financed by their home governments. Although at present, Xiamen University does not have scholarships designated for overseas students, OEC each semester does offer some incentives to overseas students based on their course scores and overall performance. In the university, about 20% of overseas students have the opportunity to win the title of “Best Overseas Student”, other citation certificates and cash prizes issued by OEC. |
