        Overseas Education College (OEC) is the institution of higher learning in Xiamen University specialized in overseas education. Founded in 1956 and formerly known as Overseas Correspondent College and other names, it is one of the oldest institutions in China offering teaching programs for overseas students. OEC got its present name in 1991 with the approval from the Ministry of Education. OEC includes the Department of Chinese, Distance Education Center, Office of Overseas Students, Research Institute of Overseas Chinese Education, etc. It is one of the four national Southeast-Asia-oriented Chinese teaching bases in China and one of the key institutions designated by the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council to support China’s neighboring countries in teaching Chinese.

         In addition to the management of all overseas students studying in different colleges and departments of the university, OEC is also responsible for their study and training of Chinese and administers two national HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) tests annually. In its five decades of development, the college has formed its characteristics of embracing the whole world, orienting towards Southeast Asia, and offering Chinese language teaching programs with either students in Xiamen or through distance instruction. On higher levels, OEC offers regular undergraduate program of the Chinese language with areas of studies in business Chinese and Chinese culture. It is entitled to enroll MA candidates in the specialty of linguistics and applied linguistics with two research areas of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and contrastive studies of Chinese and foreign languages and cultures, and MA candidates in the specialty of communications with academic focus on Chinese culture and communication. What’s more, the college takes in Ph.D. candidates in the specialty of art studies with art communication studies as their area of research in collaboration with the Department of Chinese Language & Culture in the College of Humanities.

         OEC has always taken the work of serving overseas students as its top priority: all the faculty and staff of the college have made concerted efforts to smooth the way for overseas students to come to study in China and to create a comfortable environment where they can pursue their studies with high efficiency. OEC is always ready to offer guidance and suggestions in regard of their study in the university.
