 In 1921, Mr. Tan Kah Kee, the well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader, founded Xiamen University. At present it is the only leading comprehensive university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education in any of the five China’s special economic zones, and is one of country’s top universities listed for the national higher-education boosting initiative of the “211 Project” and the “985 Project”. As a comprehensive institution of higher learning, the university is made up of a graduate school, 18 colleges with 43 departments, and many research institutes, providing a wide range of educational programs in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and technology, management science, art education, and medical science. Situated on the coast of Xiamen bay and with the green hills behind and the blue seas in the front, it boasts one of the most beautiful universities in China covering a total area of 540 hectares with three campuses. Recent years have seen great improvement at the university for its teaching and research facilities as well as its public service system.
Adhering to the principle of opening up to the outside world and reaching out, the university has engaged in international and regional inter-university exchanges and cooperations in an all-embracing manner, having twinned up or established links with 77 universities and colleges from countries such as the United States, Britain, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Korea and Thailand, as well as those in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Meanwhile, it has carried out academic exchanges with lots of overseas research institutions. Students from as many as more than 100 countries and regions have studied at the university in its 84 years of history. Now, around 1,000 overseas students from 50-plus countries and regions study here each year. The university authorities try to provide them with the best possible learning and living conditions and encourage them to communicate and exchange with students from the Chinese mainland.
