Chinese Study Program
    introduces to foreign college students history,culture,society,economy and language of Chine  


China Study Program introduces to foreign college students history, culture, society, economy and language of China, and each semester will be approximately 15 weeks in duration. These students are required to study basic conversational Chinese during their stay at the OEC of Xiamen University. At OEC they will also study several other courses given in English by famous professors of Xiamen Uniersity: Contemporary Society and Public Policy; Elective seminar on local arts and customs like Tai Qi; Chinese history, Geography and Culture; Modernization & economic development. The academic hours and details for these courses are as follows:

Chinese Language Courses: 42 hours of classroom instruction

Modernization & economic development:

In addition to the 20 lecture hours, students will also make field trips to a major state-owned enterprise, special economic zone, foreign business joint-venture firms in China.

Student will study the following topics:
--An overview of economic development between 1949 and 1977
--Rural reform and poverty alleviation
--The development of township & village enterprises
--Food security
--Economic reform since 1978
--Ownership system and state-owned enterprises
--Introduction of foreign capital
--Special Economic Zones
--Hong Kong and Macao economies
--Foreign trade and WTO

Contemporary Society and Public Policy:32 class hours
--Confucianism
--Buddhism
--Daoism
--Folk Religion
--Christianity
--Religious policy
--Legal system
--Ethnic groups
--Government’s structure
--Mass media
--Education
--Social Security
--Population
--Foreign Policy
--Amoy Magic

Martial art course: 32 class hours.

Chinese Medicine course: 4 class hours inclusive of a visit of the clinical practice of acupuncture

Field trips:
1.A village tour outside of Xiamen Island;
2.Tour: a joint-venture company in Xiamen;
3.Tour: Quanzhou city;
4.Tour: San Ping Shrine outside of Xiamen;
5.Tour: Buddhist Institution in Xiamen
6.A trip (lasting for 4 weeks) to Xian, Shanghai, Beijing in the middle of the semester
