It’s the first time for Simone Molieri, an American girl, to visit China. Simone has been to many other countries, of which her impression was just a flag, a piece of land, and the mountains and waters, nothing related to humans. This visit to China changes her idea about foreign countries. Before she came to China, she intended to change Chinese people; after she arrived in China, however, Chinese people totally changed her. Chinese teachers are erudite, Chinese students are intelligent and warm-hearted, and Chinese people are hospitable, who are always willing to help Simone and her students and make sincere friends with them. Simone feels that compared to the Chinese people, the vast land, and great mountains of China seems negligible. This is what Simone said in the closing ceremony of the 8th term of China Study Program, co-hosted by Overseas Education College (OEC) of Xiamen University and Council of Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) of North America, with eyes full of the passion for China. For several times she couldn’t speak because of strong emotions. In the end, she said that she would put china in the bottom of her heart forever.
Three months and a half ago, Simone and other twelve American students arrived in Ximen University to attend the study of China Study Program. In OEC, the students studied basic Chinese language, Chinese martial arts, and traditional Chinese paintings, and attended the lectures on Chinese economy, culture, and society given by famous professors in Xiamen University in English. During the study period, they have been to Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Xiamen, and the cities near to Xiamen for over half a month to make field studies on the basis of what they have learnt.
China Study Program began in 2000 and was carried out two times every year. It aims to help the university students in America to know China and Chinese culture at various aspects. On the afternoon of April 22, 2004, an impressive and touching closing ceremony for the 8th term students was held in the meeting room on the fifth floor of the OEC office building. |
