The Opening Ceremony, organized by the OEC of Xiamen University for overseas freshmen, was held at Lianxing Building at 8:00 a.m. of August 28, 2003.

The vice president of Xiamen University, Professor Deng Liping, attended and made a speech at the Ceremony. In his speech, Professor Deng first extended his warm welcome to over 300 overseas freshmen coming from nearly 40 countries all over the world, then introduced to them the long history, elegant campus, first-class teaching facilities, living conditions and extensive measures taken to develop the educational opportunities for overseas students at Xiamen University. Professor Deng also expressed his sincere hope that the overseas students should work hard at their studies, and contribute to the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
Dean of the OEC, Miss Zhan Xinli also discussed the efforts made in recent years to open up a new perspective in overseas education and improve the facilities and the quality of teaching. After that, an officer from the Entry-Exit Administration Office of Xiamen Public Security passed on the important points Concerning Residence Permit and Visa for the International students. Later on, Nicolas, a student from French representing all the student abroad, expressed his feeling of studying in Xiamen University. Finally, director of Office of Overseas Students, Professor Huang jianjun and Director of Chinese Department, Professor Chen Xin also gave speeches to stress some important points for overseas students.
With the enlarging of the educational scale and the upgrading of the educational level, till today, the OEC has over 600 foreign students, of which over 90% are learning Chinese Language and Chinese Traditional Medicine, and others are scattered at different departments throughout Xiamen University to study degree courses. In the coming 21st century, by making good use of the regional advantage and laying stress on it educational features, the College will try to set itself up as an influencing base for overseas Chinese Teaching and a research center of overseas Chinese education. Xiamen University is now making big strides towards its goal of building a “key high-level university well-known both in China and abroad.” |
